So as has been stated in a couple of recent posts, I went back to driving truck. But in this adventure, I am going to take tech with me this time around.
In my short time back driving I have seen some pretty sketchy stuff through the windshield and also through the mirrors. I talked with the company I am driving for, and I am going to equip my ride with cameras, for my protection and for their protection as well.
I am still up in the air with regards to a driver facing camera because while it is their truck, I am installing this set up on my own dime.
To take it further, I am going to be writing a bridge interface that will allow me to incorporate select data from ELD and overlay it on the data from the NDVR. People are not really intelligent and laws be damned.
This is a means of protecting ME as the driver in the event that something goes sideways.
I will also be incorporating an onboard PC for other select functions associated with this entire project. It will not be a fast process, but it will be something that will afford me a means of staying involved in the tech world while also generating an income to contribute to my lifestyle.
Being disabled is not always a choice, and not everyone has the ability to bounce back, but I myself have found that too much time with myself and no direction to focus tends to make the state of mind declare war upon yourself. I have done many things in my life, and for the time being this seems to be the least destructive to my body physically.
I am not living in a truck, but I would not be opposed to doing it again with enough of the correct incentives. We had some pretty intense storms roll through here last week, and I must say while they did not compare to my first winter over the road, some people should probably not be behind the wheel of a motor vehicle at all... ESPECIALLY IF THEY CAN NOT PUT THEIR DAMNED PHONES DOWN.
Don't get me wrong, there is a need to navigate, and even communicate...
But please, do it hands free... and do not drive down the road watching a movie... that is my life in your hands, and my family would like me to make it home just as much as you want to arrive at your destination.
Anyhow as I start building this out, I will be adding photos and video clips to this because everything we see is not people being stupid. We also see some pretty cool stuff from time to time.
The truck I am outfitting is NOT my dream truck, nor is it even my ideal truck, but once I build the system, I will easily be able to migrate it to another truck should I decide to go back over the road or even have a psychotic episode and buy my own truck.
This is something that while everyone is against surveillance, including myself, I feel needs to be done as a means of protecting myself from the actions of other people. Everyone is so quick to blame the commercial truck, simply because there is a name on the side of that truck and usually an insurance company behind it.
The part that most average drivers do not see is that part where my CDL makes me criminally negligent if I can not defend against false claims, and prove what is apparent from my end.
Stay tuned
I will be documenting all of the equipment used, along with the software, API's and any code that I produce to accomplish my goals.
